The erosion of transatlantic relations is a strategic crisis for Germany. The Trump years have revealed both Germany's vulnerability and the indispensability of the alliance of democracies. Without this alliance, neither a stable Europe can be built nor the international order shaped.
With the new President Joe Biden, there is a unique opportunity to overcome this crisis and to renew the Western alliance in such a way that it will last well beyond the next four years. To this end, the German government should immediately approach the incoming U.S. administration and reach a New Deal.
