Model calculations show that we will have to permanently use a bundle of different and creative measures to keep the reproduction number (R) of SARS-CoV-2 below 1. In order to master the transition into the virus control phase as a society, this will require a clear governmental framework but also the self-responsible initiative of individuals. With regard to the measures taken, it is advisable to weigh up the need to protect health on the one hand and the complex health, social and economic consequences on the other. The triad of creativity, responsibility and transformation can serve as a guiding principle for action by society as a whole. For a gradual opening of the lockdown in individual areas of private and public life, however, fundamental prerequisites must be met at the federal, state and local levels.
