More than a decade after China launched the Belt and Road Initiative, a new project called the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) was announced at the 2023 G20 summit, seen by some as a Western alternative to BRI. Despite early excitement, the corridor has faced skepticism and slow progress, especially due to the ongoing Gaza War. Still, experts from the involved regions argue that IMEC holds strategic promise for economic growth, tech collaboration, and regional stability. The concept of “corridorization” is highlighted as a new phase of globalization, reshaping global supply chains and supporting a multipolar world order. The report points to successful bilateral progress, particularly between India and the UAE, and suggests that strong stakeholder commitment can overcome geopolitical tensions. It also offers practical recommendations, including expanding port connections, developing a digital corridor, promoting clean energy, involving the private sector, and addressing competition concerns with the Suez Canal.

Dr. Gedaliah Afterman, Dr. N. Janardhan, Mohammed Baharoon & Dr. Maximilian Mayer argue that the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) remains a strategic opportunity for driving economic growth, promoting technological collaboration, and serving as a platform for regional stabilization. The authors also stress that such initiatives have the potential to bolster middle powers and an inter- and trans-regional approach, thus mitigating U.S.-China bipolarism and fragmentation.
