The core of Jaap de Hoop Scheffer's speech and the following discussion was the Russian war in Ukraine and the resulting consequences for the North Atlantic Alliance. Geo-strategic as well as military-strategic questions on the scope of the intended NATO accessions of Finland and Sweden, on Western energy policy and energy economy as well as on the role of China in international power structures were discussed. Structural aspects of the defense alliance were also discussed, such as the need for a certain strategic coherence while maintaining tactical flexibility and closing gaps in cooperation with the EU and third countries in order to be able to expand potentials for synergies.
This event was jointly organized by the Henry Kissinger Professorship for Security and Strategic Studies at the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies at the University of Bonn, the German Atlantic Society, and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
