The attack by the Ukrainian army was a major military surprise that put the Russians on the defensive and put the military leaders under enormous pressure. It is possible that Ukraine will be able to hold on to the territories it has gained in the longer term - but only developments over the next few days will show this. Prof. Schlie also explains that the important Sudzha gas measuring station, through which countries such as Austria and Slovakia continue to receive gas from Russia, could also be a Ukrainian target. He assumes that NATO did not know about the attack beforehand.
