CASSIS Fellow Dr Landry Charrier analyses the political and economic crisis in Germany CASSIS Fellow Dr Landry Charrier on the dissolution of the German government

Dr Landry Charrier on the end of the coalition between the SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens and the FDP and the consequences of a potential chancellorship for the CDU candidate for chancellor, Friedrich Merz.

In the interview with Dominique Diogon, Dr Landry Charrier looks at the fragility of the German government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The focus is on the rapid disintegration of the governing coalition, in particular the resignation of Finance Minister Christian Lindner and Germany's increasing economic difficulties. Charrier explains that Germany's economic problems are due to high energy prices and international competition, particularly from China. In addition, the responsibility of past Chancellor Angela Merkel is emphasised, whose policy of continuity and failure to make important investments in infrastructure and modernisation of the economy is criticised.
Another central point of the interview is the question of how Germany must reorient itself after the end of cheap Russian gas, the uncertainty surrounding the Chinese market and the potential loss of the American security guarantee. Charrier points out that political renewal in Germany may involve a return of the CDU under Friedrich Merz as the favourite for the next elections. Merz appears to represent a new direction in German politics that favours European sovereignty, according to Charrier.
