Both the political right and the left-wing alliance were able to score points in the new elections in France with expensive promises, such as a return to retirement at 60. But there is simply no money for this. France is already groaning under a gigantic mountain of debt, with the deficit growing year on year. Only recently, the financial markets reacted to this unrestrained debt policy by downgrading the country's credit rating. But what drove French voters to vote for a populist economic policy that cannot be financed and can hardly be implemented in the new parliament without a majority of its own?
