Before Christmas, the United States launched a new initiative to better protect merchant ships in the Red Sea against attacks by Houthi rebels. Ulrich Schlie believes that Iran's indirect involvement in many conflicts in the region poses a risk of escalation in the Red Sea as well as in the Middle East conflict. The presence of warships alone could have a major impact against attacks with drones and cruise missiles. Schlie expects Germany to participate in the coming days, once the Bundestag has had a chance to discuss the matter.
