In 2014, a large protest movement developed in Ukraine, which demonstrated on Maidan Square in Kyiev in favour of Ukraine's rapprochement with the European Union. Following the removal of the pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, a power vacuum developed, which the Russian president used to advance into the Crimean peninsula.
