„The Strategic Orientation of NATO after Madrid and the Alliance’s Nexus with the EU“
Wednesday, 6 July 2022 | 5 pm - 6:30 pm | Hörsaal I, University of Bonn, Regina-Pacis-Wegs 1, 53113 Bonn
At the June 2022 summit in Madrid, NATO will adopt its new Strategic Concept, the key document that will guide the Alliance for the next decade. In addition to NATO's current core tasks, a stronger focus on issues of resilience and dealing with disruptive technologies, hybrid threats and space security is expected. Likewise, a fundamental adjustment of military strategy is to be expected due to geostrategic shifts and new threat perceptions with regard to Russia and China.
What implications will this concept have for the member states of NATO? To what extent will it influence the European Union? How may NATO successfully implement a ten-year concept when it faces only a multitude but also very strong dynamics of defence and geopolitical challenges and upheavals? How does the concept affect other potential accession candidates and the current membership applications? Which impacts for the security of the European Union could emerge from the adaptation of the military strategy and reinforcements of deterrence capabilities, especially in NATO's east?
Jaap De Hoop Scheffer, former NATO Secretary General (2004-2009), will address these and many other questions in his speech, framing NATO's Strategic Concept in response to the current world situation.
This event is jointly organized by the Henry Kissinger Chair for Security and Strategic Studies at the Center for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies at the University of Bonn, the German Atlantic Society, and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. It is open to public and will be held in English.
