Study in Bonn - What you need to know
Student accomodation
Generally, the University of Bonn does not provide accomodation. However, here are some options students can consider: The Studierendenwerk (Student dorm rooms) offers students dormitories in Bonn, Rheinbach, and Sankt Augustin. The offer includes single rooms in shared flats, apartments, double apartments, and two- to four-room apartments. The rent includes all incidental costs such as electricity and heating as well as broadband internet access. Prices range from 280 Euros to 540 Euros, depending on the size and location of the appartment. More information and the application portal can be found on the Website of the Studierendenwerk.
Other options on the private market include shared rooms or single flats ('WG' in German for 'Wohngemeinschaft'). A website frequently used by students is WG-gesucht.
The City of Bonn
Bonn, the former capital of the Federal Republic of Germany, is located in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia in the west of Germany. As the German city of the United Nations (UN), Bonn hosts 20 UN agencies, numerous international organizations, and governmental institutions. With a rich and diverse history, including Roman ruins, the birth place of the famous musician and composer Beethoven, and its important role in modern German history, Bonn is popular among both international and German tourists. The city sits at the river Rhine and is surrounded by forests and nature parks. Bonn is a modern, happy and cosmopolitan city with an exceptionally high quality of life and regional carnival.
Becoming a student in Bonn
After enrollment, students receive an Email from the Student Registry including information on the semester fee (Semesterbeitrag) and the bank account number. The semester fee is currently around 320 euros. After the semester contribution has been paid, students will get a Student-ID that is connected with an Email-Account as a student of the University of Bonn. Additionally, the Student-ID is necessary to get WIFI-access in all University buildings.
During the Opening Weeks students will be informed about the application processes for classes and the admission for exams via the platform BASIS. Furthermore, they will receive information about eCampus, the central learning platform at the University of Bonn.
Learning German
For the Master's programme "Strategy and International Security" German language skills are not a prerequisite but recommended. Language courses will be offered by the University of Bonn to accompany the studies or as intensive courses before the start of the semester. For in-semester classes, it is obligatory to take a placement test before registration.
Registration for in-semester German language courses: October 8 (from 10 am) until October 9, 2024.
If you already have a basic knowledge of the German language, your language skills will be tested via the onSET online language placement test:
1. Contact the German as a Foreign Language Section (by email) by September 27, 2024 to obtain a TAN for the placement test.
2. Register for the onSET online language placement test.
3. Your test result will be sent to you automatically. Register for the appropriate sub-level according to your test score.

Health Insurance for Students
In order to enroll, you need to prove your health insurance in Germany. International students are free to choose between different insurers and providers (public and private).
City registration
In order to apply for a residence permit, to open a bank account or to get a German tax ID, students need to register in the City of Bonn. A landlord confirmation is necessary for the registration.

The International Office offers students a variety of programmes such as the Study Buddy programme and events. Besides, you can meet other international studens at events of the International Club or the Erasmus Student Network Bonn.
