Prof. Dr. Heinemann-Grüder - Discussion on European Troops in Ukraine Prof. Dr. Heinemann-Grüder - Discussion on European Troops in Ukraine

In a recent interview on the discussion about European troops in Ukraine, Andreas Heinemann-Grüder explores the challenges involved in securing a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. The question of how and by whom this peace can be guaranteed remains unclear. In particular, the stance of European states and Russia's reactions will play a crucial role.

In the interview, Heinemann-Grüder addresses the difficult situation that would arise from a potential deployment of European troops to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine. Given the enormous number of soldiers required and the unclear mandate, the political scientist states that it is currently unrealistic for European countries to provide the necessary troops. He also emphasizes that Russia – particularly Vladimir Putin – would not accept NATO troops in Ukraine. However, he argues that this discussion should not be determined by Russia, as it is up to Ukraine to request foreign troop assistance if the country is threatened. The resolution of this dilemma remains uncertain, as the funding and specific deployment of troops have not yet been clarified.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Heinemann-Grüder 2is a Senior Fellow at CASSIS and an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Bonn.
