As a unique degree programme in Germany, the MSIS programme combines diplomatic issues with security policy topics and attracts students from all over the world. Offered entirely in English, the programme was developed to meet the challenges of the globalized world of the 21st century. It focuses on current issues in security studies and international law as well as on a broad spectrum of modern challenges in the fields of geoeconomics, technology and ecology. The aim of the program is to provide students with a sound overview of the current state of scientific research and at the same time establish a clear link to political practice.
For the opening ceremony, the students of the new semester gathered together with invited guests in the ballroom of the main building of the University of Bonn. In the opening speeches, the head of the degree program, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schlie, and the Vice-Rector for International Affairs of the University, Prof. Dr. Birgit Ulrike Münch, warmly welcomed the students to the University of Bonn for the start of the semester.
Guest speaker Michele Valensise, former Italian ambassador to Germany, drew attention to the complex security policy challenges that the war in Ukraine and the Middle East, the conflict between the USA and China and climate change will bring for Germany and Europe. According to Valensise, this requires fundamental and practical training in security policy issues, such as that offered by the MSIS programme.
Nora Müller, Head of International Politics at the Körber Foundation's Berlin office, gave an overview of the numerous professional opportunities beyond diplomacy in her presentation. Issues relating to the security policy and strategic orientation of Germany and the EU will continue to gain relevance in the coming years, and so the demand for experts dedicated to security policy issues in ministries, universities, foundations and NGOs will also increase. Due to its international and interdisciplinary perspective, the MSIS program is an excellent preparation for such tasks.
