Summer School "Geography of Hunger in a Multi-Crisis World"
Hunger is the most dramatic manifestation of the socio- economic, governance, and environmental challenges facing humanity today. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (UN, 2015) identified a set of measurable Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the ambitious aim to eradicate hunger by 2030.
The seminar will analyze the complex issue of the current geography of hunger in a multi-crisis world. Two learning outcomes are pursued:
- Understand the causes behind the persistence of hunger in the 21st century.
- Familiarize with the main international cooperation initiatives aimed at solving this issue within the framework of the second Sustainable Development Goal of "Zero Hunger" (SDG-2).
The program includes 10 academic lectures to be held over five days. Three lectures will be delivered in English and grouped on the same day. The remaining lectures will be in Spanish. Additionally, a panel discussion on international cooperation for the development of sustainable food systems will be organized. The movie "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" will be screened, followed by a lecture on the multifactorial nature of famines and a group dynamic and debate.

Target Audience: The course is aimed at all those interested in understanding the global challenges of building sustainable food systems. Particularly, the seminar will be informative for international cooperation professionals seeking to delve into the latest academic research on the issue of hunger, as well as university students aspiring to work in the field of hunger alleviation. The sessions will be held in Spanish with exception of Wednesday and Thursday, where there will be a couple of sessions in English Language.
Call for Scholarship: The Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UPC) has opened the call for scholarships for students until April 26, which cover both the course registration and accommodation in Santander (flight not included). For further information see here.
