Round Table Syria: Shattered Crescent

The war in Ukraine overshadows the conflicts and crises in the Near and Middle East. They are destabilising the area once called the Fertile Crescent. Syria and its neighbouring regions are affected by civil war, the power struggle of regional and international actors and the disastrous consequences of an earthquake at the beginning of 2023.

What political and economic prospects does Syria have? Will the different ethnic and religious groups of the divided country find a common way back to a peaceful modus vivendi? What are the sources of potential conflicts in the future? The lecture will examine these problems from a historical and geopolitical perspective. They will be analysed in more detail during the subsequent discussion.
