The handbook outlines three fundamental commitments for studying Global China: promoting diverse perspectives and non-binary frameworks, employing nuanced analyses to grasp Beijing’s transnational relations and applying alternative methodological approaches to explore various future trajectories for China in international affairs. Additionally, it addresses and mitigates epistemic pitfalls, such as othering and strategic narcissism, that obstruct the understanding of Global China. The handbook introduces five analytical frameworks—focusing on relationality, global capitalist processes, language and discourse power, planetary-scale modernization and experimentalism—to guide future research. By utilizing these frameworks, researchers can gain more insight into the complex factors shaping Global China within the broader context of global cooperation, competition and crisis.
