Dr. Frank Umbach on Peace Negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine War Dr. Frank Umbach on Peace Negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine War

The Russia-Ukraine war has not only shaken the geopolitical balance in Europe but also raised profound questions about the role of international actors. At the center of this are the relations between the USA, Russia, and Europe, as well as the question of how the West should respond to Russia's aggression. In this context, the role of Donald Trump and the political dynamics within Europe are also examined, particularly with regard to the influence of right-wing parties and the political will to stand up to Russia. Europe's economic power and the strategic importance of political unity also play a crucial role in analyzing the conflict.

In the interview with ntv, Dr. Frank Umbach discusses the geopolitical developments in the Ukraine conflict and their impact on international politics. He explains that Donald Trump’s advisors have now abandoned the idea of ending the war within 24 hours. Instead, the question arises whether Trump will insist on a Russian dictated peace or if he aims to go down in history as a "deal maker." Umbach emphasizes that Europe is economically strong enough to stand up to Russia, with the EU's GDP being about eight to ten times that of Russia. However, it remains unclear whether Europe will be able to muster the political will to continue standing firm against Russia in light of the growing influence of right-wing parties.

Dr. Frank Umbach2 is the Research Director of the European Cluster for Climate, Energy, and Resource Security (EUCERS), an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the RSIS in Singapore, and a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Natolin/Warsaw.
