Space is no longer just about research and prestige. 80 countries are now running national space programs and trying to stake their claims. Orbit has also long been a potential battleground in which military powers target each other's satellites. Many questions of international law have not been clarified at all. After all, the Outer Space Treaty was written in 1967 - back then, no one thought of private space companies or that the increasing amount of space debris would become a serious threat.
