The article points to a foreign policy turnaround in Turkey that was initiated by the AKP. In contrast to previous Turkish governments, the AKP is trying to protect its interests not only through traditional political alliances, but also through instruments of "soft power". It relies on a policy of emotional communication through identity, religion, language and culture and aims to appeal to parts of the heterogeneous Turkish diaspora and persuade them to support the AKP.
