According to Brake, such acts are primarily aimed at ‘destroying the connectivity of our societies’. One way to counter such acts of sabotage is to strengthen our own operational capability. This could be achieved by strengthening the navy and civilian law enforcement agencies as well as harmonizing and improved cooperating with existing operational authorities. The aim must be to obtain an improved maritime situation picture, Brake continued. At the same time, however Brake notes that, despite all protective measures, it is not possible to fully protect maritime critical infrastructure.
